Stefen spends the week shopping for this seasonal-inspired menu, which is never revealed until the dinner begins. As Stefen’s wife, Julie, says, “It’s a an underground dinner for the adventurer!”

On a Friday night in October, in a fundraising effort supporting Susan Lovenburg’s campaign for school board, 27 people filled the house of Jean Kridl. As guests sat at three long tables, draped with white tablecloths, Stefen began serving a meal of parsnip and cauliflower bisque, bacon and potato clafoutis, maple rosemary braised short ribs, and warm chocolate cake. As each course was served, Stefen introduced the plate, informing guests of the dishes’ components as well as his inspirations.

“France became the theme of this menu,” he told Susan’s supporters, as they began quickly enjoying their first bites. Many were noting Stefen’s amazing credentials, telling their neighbor, “He’s a really big-time chef,” as their plates become wiped clean.

After a quick introduction, Stefen was back in the kitchen, plating the next course, working right alongside Julie, who’s been in restaurants extensively as well, working as manager of Waterfront Restaurant in San Francisco, for one. Kitchen Kriminal has been very flexible for Stefen and Julie, as they raise their 8-year-old son, Carson. “Kitchen Kriminal gives us a lot more freedom, and when you have little kids that’s important,” said Julie.
