Mengali’s Florist smells amazing. The aroma hits you when you walk through the door, a wall of scent that’s a mixture of every kind of flower you can imagine. It’s worth visiting Mengali’s just to get a whiff. A beautiful chandelier hangs from the ceiling, flanked by a giant arrangement of flowers. Mengali’s has a lot to entertain the eye and the nose, begging you to take some of the inspiration home and add your own sense of style to it.
Mengali’s Florist started in Woodland in 1967 by Douglas and Diane Mengali, and moved to Davis in 1971. Brendan Mengali, Diane’s son, was working as a fashion executive in Beverly Hills before deciding to return to Davis as creative director of Mengali’s. Brendan is careful to downplay his previous career, describing it as “dressing celebrities.” When asked, he compares it in light of his experience in Davis - emphasizing that both jobs involved creativity and style, but his work in Beverly Hills was “working and representing someone else’s vision.” In Davis, he gets to focus on and realize his own ideas.
